Where Is God During Times Of Crisis?

Waves of tsunami hit residences after a powerful earthquake in Natori

Some posts are simply for me.  This would be one of those times.  Words simply cannot explain what we have witnessed today as a result of the largest earthquake in Japan’s history.  Our deepest prayers, sympathies, and thoughts go out to the people of this devastated area.

Many of you may be wondering – Where is God in all of this?  That is a completely legitimate and understandable question.

The answer is that God is right there in the midst of it.  He’s not absent, asleep, disinterested, or on vacation.  Quite the contrary.

Psalm 139:8-12 says ” If I ascend to heaven, you are there!  If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!  If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.  If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you;the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.”

If God is there during the midst of this, then the natural follow-up question is why did God allow this to happen?  A lot of people may give their thoughts but here is the simple reality – I don’t know.  And truly, no one else does either.  This is a complete, devastating natural disaster and tragedy.

The only comfort I can take from this is simply knowing that God was there.  He was there when the tectonic plates shifted.  He was there when the water came crashing ashore.  He is there right now.  And He will be there when the relief efforts begin and the country is rebuilt.

That’s the only comfort I can take.  I’m so grateful He is there.

Please join me in praying there will be no more aftershocks, that the nuclear facilities cool down and stabilize, that people are safe and will be rescued, that the fires will be put out, and that God will bring supernatural peace in the midst of the immeasurable fear and pain people are experiencing.  And when opportunities are provided for you to get involved in helping bring relief to this area, please do so.

  1. Bill,

Thanks for your thoughts. My experiences have been that because of sin we simply live in a broken and fallen world. Some things are simply a mystery. No one can explain why something like this happens.

All I know is that I could not imagine living in a world where these things happen without my personal relationship with Jesus.

Jesus and His Word are the only true anchors that we have.

    Thanks again and keep searching.

    Brian

  2. The catch with your theology is that if God is there in the Tsunami then His love includes inflicting suffering. It seems to me you cant have a personal God ie one that answers your prayers, if in fact God hasnt got the personal interests of His people in mind. My own study into this topic leads me to believe that there is a creative force in the Universe which is not centered entirely on people ie one similar to Einstein’s preferred view of God
and that the God of Love in the Bible is a metaphor for compassion, which is the highest form of human concern. I am still working my way through some of the implications of this and have written a number of essays on the topic.

    • Hey Bill, I saw your comment on Brian dodd’s site. One other question I would encourage to consider is why did the God of Einstein create all this. Since you are searching I figure why not encourage w some questions that focus on the big picture. You may have done this but we shouldn’t assume. Thanks
